Bears roll against Sailors

RIFLE – Two easy baseball victories over Steamboat Springs on Saturday put Rifle in the driver’s seat in the race for second place in the Class 4A Western Slope League.Matt Jones scattered seven hits in a 12-2 mercy-rule win, halted in the sixth inning after Rifle scored three times and took a 10-run lead.Adam Krick and Brandon Leuallen each had three hits with a double in the first game of the twin bill. Leuallen also had a team-high four RBIs in the contest.Rifle’s high scoring offense ratcheted down a bit in the second game. The Bears were never threatened in the 8-0 shutout win, but they did have to go the entire seven innings to post their 10th league victory (against two losses).Leuallen, who also smacked a home run, upped his pitching record to 7-1 in blanking the Sailors. Uriel Quezada, Jones, and Krick all had two hits in the contest.Rifle, winners of 13 of its last 14 games, concludes the regular season with back-to-back single league games at Glenwood Springs Wednesday and Palisade at Grand Junction’s Suplizio Field Thursday afternoon.
