Bears softball nets pair of league victories
RIFLE – The Rifle Bears softball team seems to be coming together.
The Bears earned a two-game sweep of league foe Montezuma-Cortez Friday to even their league record, but dropped a nonleague matchup on Saturday against Durango at Rifle.
On Friday against Montezuma-Cortez, Trisha Wailes pitched back-to-back complete games for Rifle as the Bears won by scores of 7-4 and 8-5. Wailes allowed just four earned runs in her 14 innings of work.
Kari Wiig and Lindsey McCue-Locke paced the Bears offensively, each notching a pair of hits in both games.
Against Durango on Saturday, Rifle led through the first three innings, but Durango posted three runs in the fourth innings and went on for a 7-1 victory.
Wiig was saddled with the loss, giving up two earned runs before being replaced by Wailes after the fourth inning. The Bears defense struggled in the contest, giving up four unearned runs on three errors.
Rifle’s record is now 2-2 in league and 7-8 overall.
