Bears take fourth in golf tourney

MONTROSE, Colorado ” Behind a 2-over-par 72 from Klayton Costanzo, Rifle scored one of its better finishes of the young high school boys golf season at Black Canyon Golf Club in Montrose on Thursday.

The Bears’ team score of 244 placed them fourth in a top-loaded field at the Montrose High School-hosted tourney, from which Montezuma-Cortez emerged as the winner with a 220. That topped second-place Montrose by two strokes.

Taking home top individual honors at Black Canyon was Cortez’s Brian Grubbs, who carded a 2-under-par 68 to edge out Pagosa Springs’ Clark Ricaberger by two strokes. Costanzo was third.

Also scoring well for Rifle were Alex Haynes, who shot an 80, and Hogan Peterson, who posted a 92.

“We were happy with the results,” Rifle coach Deanna Forney said. “We’re getting there.”

Forney’s Bears are off until Wednesday’s tournament at Eagle Vail Golf Club.
