Being nice doesn’t cut it in Demons’ loss to Bulldogs

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado – Too nice.

Those are the two words that rushed to the forefront of Glenwood Springs volleyball coach Sarah Ryan’s mind after watching her Demons stumble to a 3-2 defeat against visiting Moffat County on Saturday.

Up 2-1 and having won back-to-back games in dominating fashion, Glenwood seemingly had the match in hand.

In the fourth and fifth games, though, the Demons were a bit too hospitable.

“I felt like they were too nice,” Ryan said of her team. “They need to have that intensity. They need to find that aggression.”

Moffat County took full advantage of the Demons’ lapse in focus, storming back to finish off a 26-24, 17-25, 15-25, 25-11, 15-12 victory.

“I think we were sick of losing, absolutely sick of it,” Bulldogs senior Lauren Roberts said. “We weren’t going to go home without the win.”

Entering Saturday’s match, Roberts and company had been struggling. Losses to Delta and Palisade last weekend left the team with a 3-6 overall record and a 0-2 mark in the 4A Western Slope League.

“This is a big turning point for us,” Moffat County coach Sandy Camilletti said. “It’s off our back now. … We needed that win.”

And the Bulldogs got it in scrappy fashion, digging virtually everything in sight in the fourth and fifth games. Coupled with an attack led by Roberts, they were able to close out a comeback triumph.

Roberts finished with a match-high 15 kills. Annie Sadvar belted 11 kills.

“My outside hitters, Lauren Roberts and Annie Sadvar, came to play today,” Camilletti said. “I’m proud of them.”

Kenzie Caple paced the Glenwood attack with 14 kills. Taylor Nicola and Cassidy Gaddis each had six kills and Anna Gauldin had five.

Next up for the Demons, who fell to 7-2 overall and to 2-2 in the 4A WSL, is a Tuesday trip to Fruita Monument for a non-league engagement.

Moffat County hosts Steamboat Springs on Thursday.
