Bender last Demon standing in 4A Region 8 tournament

DELTA, Colorado ” Courtney Bender is the last Glenwood Springs girls tennis player standing at the Class 4A Region 8 tournament in Delta.

She won two of her three Thursday matches and has a shot to earn one of the region’s two state berths at No. 2 singles. Bender will take the court today at 9:30 a.m. in a playback match.

Thursday was a marathon day for the Demons and the rest of the 12-team region field.



“We started at 7 o’clock, warming up,” Glenwood Springs coach Phyllis Zilm said at about 8 p.m. Thursday night. The Demons had just finished for the day. “We’ve just been going and going and going.”

Roaring Fork’s team also made the trip to Delta. Their first-day results had not been reported of press time Thursday night.



PEACH VALLEY, Colorado ” Coal Ridge polished off an unbeaten girls soccer regular season by throttling visiting Vail Christian 6-0 on Thursday.

Sydney Wright scored the Titans’ lone first-half goal before the hosts unloaded on the Saints with five second-half scores.

Wright scored twice in the second half to complete a hat trick and Erica Ruiz, Kourtney Mitchell and Audrey Asplund added goals as Coal Ridge polished off a 14-0-1 regular season.

The 3A Western Slope League-champion Titans will host a first-round game in the 32-team state playoffs, which open Tuesday. First-round games take place on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) will draft playoff brackets at Sunday’s girls soccer pairing meeting.
