Benson, Indians too much for Bears hoopsters
DENVER ” The Rifle Bears are known as a solid defensive squad, but there was no holding back Cheyenne Mountain’s Holly Benson.
Class 4A’s leading scorer, Benson tallied 22 points as the Indians downed Rifle 74-54 Friday night at Regis University to eliminate the Bears from the Class 4A girls postseason.
The Bears (19-5) stuck with Cheyenne Mountain in the first half, erasing a six-point first quarter deficit to even the score at 31-all at halftime.
The Indians (23-2) came alive in the third, however. Cheyenne Mountain outscored Rifle 26-15 in the frame and kept pouring it on in the fourth, posting a 17-8 advantage.
Along with Benson, Caitlyn Saulsbury and Ashley Detrich netted 16 and 10 points, respectively, for the Indians.
Senior Krista Wagstrom paced Rifle with 15 points to end her prep basketball career, while junior Renee Laudick added 14.
Cheyenne Mountain advanced to the Brenda House Region finals to face Mullen (21-3) Saturday night. No score was available at press time.
