BMS hoops advances with first-round win

Basalt Middle School advanced to Thursday’s semifinal round of the eighth-grade girls PEG League postseason basketball tournament by winning its first round contest Tuesday.Basalt, the tournament’s No. 4 seed, edged No. 5 Carbondale, 25-23. Melissa Steward led the Longhorns with eight points. They face No. 1 Riverside of New Castle at 6 p.m. Thursday.Maria Flores threw in a game-high 11 points in defeat for the Wolverines.In other first-round action Tuesday, No. 3 Rifle hosted No. 6 St. John at home.The results from that game were unavailable Tuesday night. The winner of the Cubs-Panthers game faces No. 2 Glenwood Springs at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Both games will be at Basalt Middle School. The winners advance to Saturday’s championship game at 10:30 a.m. Semifinal losers square off at 9 a.m. for third place.
