PEACH VALLEY — Amber Bowles isn’t where she wants to be at the end of the season, but the Coal Ridge High School junior does like where she is right now.

“I at least ran my PR [personal record] for the season,” said Bowles, who was speaking of her time in the 300-meter hurdles race during the seventh-annual Coal Ridge Invitational track and field meet on Friday. “It’s not quite my PR of all time, but it’s a step in the right direction.”

Indeed it was for the two-time state qualifier in the hurdles events. Bowles’ time of 49.39 seconds in the event might have been well behind the first-place time of Abby Grace McGee of Class 4A Montrose (47.34), but it was good enough to be the second-best time in Class 3A this season, according to Milesplit’s web site at co.milesplit.com.

She also had a second-place finish in the 100 hurdles to McGee and ran the third leg of the 4×400 relay, which finished second to 4A Montrose. Among 3A schools, though, no one was faster than Bowles in her events.

Bowles led the way for the Titans’ in helping them finish third in the team standings with 81.5 points. Paonia finished first with 109, with Palisade (104), Coal Ridge and Moffat County (64) following.

The Coal Ridge junior also managed a season-best time in the 100 hurdles, finishing behind McGee in 16.43. That, according to Milesplit, is ranked third in 3A.

Running the hurdles now seems like a family event that Amber Bowles has continued since her older brother, Andy, was a state placer in both hurdles events on his way to earning a track and field scholarship at Colorado State in Fort Collins. And for the record, the time to beat in both events this year is owned by Faith Christian’s Sarah Yocum, who has run a 46.87 in the 300 hurdles and a 15.34 in the 100 hurdles.

Bowles, who said she has run as fast as a 47.05 at the Western Slope League meet in May of 2014, feels she can get there thanks to some physical and mental growth she’s made since then.

“I was thinking too much at the beginning of the season,” she said. “I thought too much about my form and it messed my time up. I just realized that if I listen to my coaches and don’t think too much during a race and just run, I know I’ll do just fine.”

That 4×400 relay team she ran on that included Sarai Ochoa, Santana Martinez and Mariela Martinez ran a second-place time of 4:25.45, which currently ranks seventh in 3A.

Also finishing strong in her events was Coal Ridge senior Britni Allen, who finished second in the shot put with a mark of 38 feet even and third in the discus with a throw of 114-0. Like Bowles, Allen’s marks were the best among 3A competitors in those events.

On the boys side, Coal Ridge’s 4×100 and 4×400 relays each crossed the finish line first in their respective races. A big part of both of them was junior Sergio Valentin, who gave the Titans a big lead during the second leg of the 4×100 and caught Montrose senior Jordan Walker from close to 10 yards behind in the third leg of the 4×400 to give his team the lead for good.

“He is an unbelievable competitor,” said Coal Ridge coach Ben Kirk of Valentin, who Kirk admitted was still learning how to run track. “There’s some guys who lose and brush it off and move on to the next thing. Sergio takes it personally. I have no doubt that he’ll be one of our fun guys to watch this year.”

Coal Ridge’s 4×400 team of Stosh Kutnicki, Noah Crisler, Valentin and Enrique Bucio won in 3:31.97. Its 4×100 team of Tyler Sheerin, Valentin, Jared Duran and Kutnicki won in 45.16 seconds.

In the team standings, Montrose managed to squeak ahead of Cedaredge for the team championship. The Coal Ridge boys finished third.

Valentin nearly came away with a win in the 100 meters, with Rifle High junior Tyler Bosshardt outleaning Valentin by one-onehundreth of a second in 11.47. Steering away from his usual distance races was Rifle senior Brenden Wagler, who clocked a 2:03.99 in the 800 to finish third behind Montrose’s Ian Meek (2:02.67) and Cedaredge’s Brenden Klaseen (2:03.60). Bosshardt also finished fourth in the long jump.
