Bulldogs’ big second half does in Rifle

PALISADE — Four players on Palisade High School’s girls basketball team scored a team-high eight points, helping the Bulldogs remain unbeaten with a 44-29 Class 4A Western Slope League victory over the Rifle Bears on Thursday night at Palisade High School.

Brenda Reyes scored nine points, and Chante Church chipped in six for Rifle (0-4 overall, 0-1 league), which used a big first quarter to take an early lead before the Bulldogs (5-0, 3-0) pulled away in the second half.

Christa Brown, Ashlyn Brown, Abby Thiessen and Aspen Guray each scored eight points to pace the Bulldogs.



“We had a lot of missed shots and a lot of turnovers,” Rifle coach Kristy Wallner said. “But that first half was the best first half of basketball we’ve played all year. That’s encouraging.”

Rifle is off until Jan. 7 when the Bears play a nonleague game at Grand Junction Central.

Palisade 54, Rifle 41

PALISADE — Rifle’s boys basketball team opened the season with a league loss to the Bulldogs.

The Bears’ record fell to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in league play. Tanner Quick finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds to pace the Bears. Zach Marengo finished with 17 points to pace the Bulldogs.

Palisade used a 20-8 run to end the first half to take a 28-24 lead headed into the third quarter.
