Burke lobbies for women’s ski slopestyle at Aspen Winter X

ASPEN, Colo. ” Sarah Burke sat down at her computer, letting the frustration seep out in an e-mail.
The usually easy going freestyle skier was upset with ESPN executives over constantly denying her requests to add a women’s skiing slopestyle event to the Winter X Games slate in Aspen.
After all, the men had the competition, which tests athletes on a variety of obstacles, including rails, kickers, jumps and gaps. Men and women snowboarders also have a slopestyle event on the course.
“I wanted to prove girl skiers are legit, too,” Burke said.
Burke’s persistent pestering paid off and the execs finally relented, adding women’s skiing slopestyle this year with the finals taking place Saturday.
“I was so excited that I jumped for joy out of my chair,” said the 26-year-old Burke, who will try to defend her skiing superpipe title for a third straight year Friday night. “When I told the other girls, they were so excited to finally get a piece of it.”
Burke is planning something special to mark the occasion, perhaps even throwing in a trick with three full rotations.
That’s a huge stunt by any standard.
Then again, Burke is already the first female to successfully land a 720, 900 and 1080 in competition.
All that just to stay ahead of the curve.
“The girls are killing it now,” said Burke, who’s from Whistler, British Columbia.
As one of the top freeskiers in the world, Burke is in high demand these days, regularly taking part in skiing films by Warren Miller and Matchstick Productions.
“I like to stay busy and try new things,” she said. “I’m always trying new things.”
Like perfecting a mean mixed berry pie. That’s another passion ” baking. Pies are one of her specialties, along with brownies.
“I’m just trying to do all the things I don’t get to do when living in a hotel room,” she said.
She did a photo layout for FHM magazine a few years ago, enjoying the experience.
Might modeling be in her future?
“It would be fun,” she said. “I like branching out.”
Her branching out has extended into fashion, too. Burke recently designed a suit for her sponsor, Roxy, that will be launched in Europe. It’s a denim and studs ensemble, sort of a business attire meets motorcycle jacket look.
“It’s really cool,” she said.
With all her side projects, how does she find time for skiing?
“That takes precedent,” Burke said. “It’s what I do most of the time and what I think about all the time.”
