Cardinal squads play semifinal games today

Staff Report

The Grand Valley boys and girls basketball teams are both a game away from the Class 2A District 5 tournament championship game.

The Cardinals girls team faces Hayden at 7 p.m. tonight, while the boys squad takes on Paonia at 8:30 p.m.

And Grand Valley has the added benefit of playing on its home court for the remainder of the tournament.

The No. 2-seed Cardinal girls defeated Hayden 43-34 in their only meeting this season.

The other girls semifinal game features No. 1 North Park against No. 4 Meeker at 4 p.m. today. The championship game is slated for 1 p.m. on Saturday.

On the boys side, No. 2 Grand Valley and No. 3 Paonia split two games this season, and both meetings were tight.

Paonia edged the Cardinals 38-36 in a preseason meeting, but Grand Valley was on the winning side of a 55-50 game two weeks ago in league play.

The other boys semifinal contest pits Rangely at Meeker at 5:30 p.m. today, with the championship game set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
