Cardinals drop opener to Hotchkiss, 42-14

PARACHUTE ” A three-touchdown lead built up by Hotchkiss early in the second quarter was too much for Grand Valley to overcome Friday night.

Cole Johnson, Keaton Bell and Brad Queen scored on runs of 1, 7 and 10 yards to give the Class 2A Bulldogs a 20-0 lead before the host Cardinals could respond.

Grand Valley’s Justin Busch scored on a 95-yard kickoff return after Queen’s TD and got a fourth-quarter touchdown pass from quarterback Richard Gallegos, but the Bulldogs scored three times and added a 37-yard field goal for a 42-14 nonconference win in the season opener for both teams.

Derek Maxfield led Grand Valley offensively with 95 yards on 11 carries. Gallegos had a rough night. Four of his 12 passes were intercepted by Hotchkiss, with only 56 passing yards.

The Class A Cardinals take on another 2A opponent Friday when they travel to Basalt.
