Cardinals spring to WSL lead
PARACHUTE – Saturday’s 52-49 upset win over the No. 2 team in the boys Class 2A basketball polls has allowed Grand Valley to earn a share of first place in the Western Slope League.
Heading into this week’s league games at Rangely, followed by a home date with Hayden, the Cardinals are 2-0 in the WSL and 5-5 overall.
Chris Tegtmeier and Jason Conklin scored 17 and 15 points in Grand Valley’s win over West Grand.
Tyler Terryberry lead the Mustangs with 11 points.
After falling behind by five at halftime, the Cardinals took the lead in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Mustangs 15-10 in the game’s final eight minutes.
Grand Valley reduced the earlier deficit down to three points at the end of the third quarter.
On Friday, a late comeback against Paonia fell short. The Cardinals dropped a 54-48 decision to the visiting Eagles in a non-league game. Grand Valley fell behind by 12 at the end of the first quarter and spent the rest of the contest playing catch-up.
Despite the obstacle they helped create, the Cardinals pulled within two points of Paonia, by outscoring the visiting Eagles in the second and third quarters.
Paonia iced the game by hitting on 10-of-12 free throws in the fourth period.
The Eagles’ Pat Simpson led all scorers with 20 points. Tegtmeier finished 15. Justin and Jason Conklin added 13 and 10 points, respectively.
