Cardinals take four to state
All the hard work Grand Valley has put in on the wrestling mat this season has started to yield positive results.When the best of Colorado’s best 2A wrestlers convene at the Pepsi Center in Denver Thursday for the opening round of the state championships, four Cardinals will be involved in matches with a potential state medal in the balance.Competing at the Region 1, 2A meet at Palisade High School Friday and Saturday, Cody Miles, who wrestles at 130 pounds, and the Cardinals 145-pounder Justin Busch earned third place medals at their respective weights.Miles, a freshman, secured a state berth with a 7-2 decision over Clay Culbreath of West Grand. Busch, a junior, pinned Dolores County’s Drew Buffington in 1 minute, 50 seconds.Two fourth-place winners – Danny Manzanares and Chance Brackett – will see action Thursday in the 2A’s 135-and 189-pound brackets.The four Cardinal sstate qualifiers represent the largest contingent Grand Valley has sent to the state meet in the three-year history of the high school’s wrestling program.The 70th annual state wrestling tournament begins its three-day run at Denver’s Pepsi Center at 3 p.m. Thursday.Championship quarterfinal and first round consolation matches are tabbed for 10 a.m. Friday, then return for a second session at 5 p.m.The tournament concludes Saturday with sessions at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.
