Cards beat Cowboys, fall to North Park

Both the Grand Valley boys and girls basketball teams discovered the Class 1A North Park Wildcats are a tough school to beat.Coming off league wins in Collbran against Plateau Valley Thursday, both squads lost contests to North Park at home Saturday.The boys fell, 57-51, despite a 20-point effort from Sam McKinley and 14 points from Dylan Culver. On Thursday, McKinley and Culver accounted for 56 points in a 79-67 win against Plateau Valley.McKinley blistered the nets for 34 points. Culver connected for 22. Most of the duo’s points came on 3-pointers. As a team, the Cardinals drained home 15 treys. McKinley hit eight shots beyond the arc. Culver had five long-range field goals.Grand Valley girlsThe girls maintained their undefeated record in the 2A Western Slope League by squeaking out a 38-33 win at Plateau Valley. The Cardinals weren’t as lucky Saturday against 1A North Park.The normally high-scoring Cardinals were grounded by the unbeaten Wildcats, who raised their record to 13-0 on a 56-32 win. Sammi Schellhaas led all scorers with 22 points. Two more North Park players – Amanda Jones and Tiana Hartman – added 15 and 13, respectively.Julianna Jones and Jessica Cielatka paced Grand Valley with nine and eight points.The Cardinals have a light schedule this week with only Friday’s home league game with Hayden on the docket.
