The Grand Valley Cardinals are starting to flap their wings on the prep boys Western Slope golf tour.

Carding a combined total of 279, Grand Valley concluded Thursday’s nine-team Eagle Valley Invitational with the lowest team score of the four area teams involved in the 18-hole event held at the Cotton Ranch Golf Club in Gypsum. Grand Valley came in sixth overall.Playing under windy conditions, Cardinal sophomore Colton Cowan led the team with an individual round of 86, good for an 11th place tie. Senior Sam McKinley posted a 90 with Ben Evers carding a 103.

Nearby Basalt continued its early-season dominance on the tour. The Longhorns’ 237 total won the team portion of tournament by five strokes over runner-up Steamboat Springs, which came in at 242.Roaring Fork, whose No. 1 player Hayden Winkler finished in the Top Ten, was seventh overall, followed by Coal Ridge and Glenwood Springs’ JV squad.

Longhorns senior Connor Rakowski took individual honors with a three over-par round of 75, two shots over teammate Jim Knous’ second-place score.After taking the weekend off, the boys tour resumes Monday in Carbondale for the annual River Valley Ranch Invitational where three area teams – Roaring Fork, Rifle and Glenwood – are scheduled to compete.
