Cards’ Neely notches fourth place finish

DENVER ” Grand Valley’s Jesse Neely improved a spot over last year’s performance at the 2004 Colorado State Class 2A Wrestling Tournament.

The 112-pounder, who finished fifth last year in his first trip to the tournament, notched a fourth-place finish after losing by major decision (13-0) in the third-place bout to Josh Lopez of Fowler.

It was Neely’s second match with Lopez. The Cardinal senior pinned Lopez in 3:48 when they met in the tournament’s second round.

Along with Lopez, Neely also defeated Wiggins’ Michael Forsha (fall, 1:42) in the main bracket before losing to Jess Vialpando of John Mall High School (4-1) in the semifinals. Neely defeated South Park’s Jeff Akana 7-1 to advance to the third-place match.

Neely finished the season with a 29-10 record.

Grand Valley also had Chanse Brackett and Parker Adkins in the tournament at 171 and 189 pounds, respectively. Both wrestlers finished the tourney 0-2.
