C’dale runner headed south for Grand Prix events

Carrie Messner

After recording a personal best and a 15th-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the International Association of Athletics Federation World Championship in Helsinki, Finland, in 2005, Carbondale resident Carrie Messner will now test her skills in South America as she travels to Brazil to compete in two Grand Prix races.”I am totally excited,” said Messner, who will be making her first trip to Brazil. “They are both Grand Prix track meets so they are high end.”Messner, who posted a time of 9 minutes, 47.47 seconds (her personal best) in the prelims of the World Championships in Finland last year, will first compete today in the Grand Prix Rio De Athletismo in Rio de Janeiro. Her second race will take place on May 21 in Belem, Brazil.”They are big meets with big prize money, so obviously my goal is to win, but I also just want to go and enjoy the experience,” Messner said. “It is unique to race in a foreign country because they are totally into track, unlike the U.S. It is kind of like going to a football game.”Messner earned a spot on the U.S. track team after racing to a third-place finish in the steeplechase at the U.S. national competition last year. For the two meets in Brazil, however, she will be competing as an individual.”I am just going down on my own. For the U.S., we don’t have a lot going on this year, so this one is just for me,” Messner said.
