Class 3A Bears maintain No. 2 state gridiron ranking

Rifle’s convincing 41-6 victory over Colorado Springs Harrison Friday evening was enough for the Bears to remain among the elite in the Class 3A state high school football polls.

Rifle (2-0) remained No. 2 in both the Rocky Mountain News and Denver Post/9News polls behind Alamosa (1-0).

In 2A football, Roaring Fork (1-0) is ranked sixth in the state in the Post/9News poll after defeating Class 3A Glenwood Springs (0-1) Friday by a 20-12 margin. The Rams are not ranked in the Rocky Mountain News prep poll.

The Glenwood Springs volleyball squad (5-0), coming off their first-ever Demon Invitational title on Saturday, vaulted into the Rocky Mountain News Class 4A prep rankings and sits at No. 5 in the state. Pueblo West (5-0) is in the top spot followed by Summit (1-0), Brighton (0-0) and Lewis-Palmer (1-0). Montezuma-Cortez (4-1), the team Glenwood beat in the Demon Invitational championship match, is ranked sixth.

The Glenwood cross country team maintained it’s hold on the No. 3 ranking on the Rocky Mountain News board, trailing top-ranked Liberty and Cheyenne Mountain.

In boys’ soccer, Class 3A Basalt, last year’s Western Slope League champion, lost its first game 6-1 to fourth-ranked Holy Family and fell from fifth to seventh in the Rocky’s prep rankings.
