Coal Ridge edges Palisade with OT goal

PALISADE, Colorado ” Jill Refior booted the winning goal in overtime as Coal Ridge’s girls soccer team turned a dominant offensive effort into a 1-0 overtime win at Palisade on Thursday.

The Class 3A Titans, now 3-1 overall, put 41 shots on goal as they knocked off the 4A Bulldogs. Only one of them found its way to the net, and that was Refior’s Audrey Asplund-assisted strike 2 minutes and 30 seconds into the first overtime period.

“We played really well,” Coal Ridge coach Brian Blair said. “It really boosts (our players’) confidence, especially since last year we lost a bunch of one-goal games. Now we’re coming out on the other end of those.”

Thursday’s win was the Titans’ second straight one-goal victory, both of the overtime variety. On Tuesday, Ashley Bowles drained the game-winner in extra time to bury Vail Mountain, 2-1.
