Coal Ridge falls to Rangely Panthers
PEACH VALLEY – It was a good start and a great finish. It was just the middle that created problems for the Coal Ridge football team. The Titans scored the first touchdown and the last two TDs in their game against Rangely on Friday, but it was the Panthers who came away with a 31-20 victory. In the last two minutes on the clock, within a span of 30 seconds, Titan quarterback Keenan Grumley cocked back and let the ball fly twice. Luckily for Coal Ridge, 6-foot-7 Alex Klein was on the receiving end. He was able to stretch out his long arms to reel in touchdowns of 20 and 33 yards as part of his four-catch, 100 yard night.
“We never gave up and I was proud of them for not giving up,” said Coal Ridge head coach Jim Hoffmann. After his first TD, a Titan onside kick was successful and two plays later Coal Ridge scored again to make the score 31-20 with 1:21 left in the game. The next onside kick wasn’t as lucky, as Rangely got it back and ran out the clock.”Again we dug ourselves a little hole and we made some mistakes and we have to get those corrected,” Hoffmann said. “As soon as we get that corrected, we’ll start winning some ball games because these kids don’t give up. You saw that out on the field.”Before Coal Ridge’s two scores, a fumble and two turnovers led to three touchdowns for Rangely. All five second-half TDs came in the very exciting fourth quarter. To start the game, Coal Ridge’s offense was moving the ball. But every time the Titans’ got going, their momentum was killed by penalties and turnovers.
Then The Titan defense stepped up. After Bradey Gasaway picked off a pass earlier in the first quarter, Ruben Palomares got an interception and ran it 30 yards for a touchdown. David Anderson’s extra point attempt was blocked, but Coal Ridge was in the lead. For the next 10 minutes, it held it.Rangely closed out the half with three possessions that began in Titan territory. Coal Ridge stopped them the first time, but couldn’t on the next two drives.”In the first half, our defense was really good. We are an iron-man team right now,” Hoffmann said of his players who play offense and defense. “I think we wore down a little bit and that is going to happen.”
The Panthers evened the score with two minutes to go in the half when Tim Willis’ 5-yard crash landed him in the end zone to tie the game at 6-6.After a fumble on the first play of Coal Ridge’s ensuing drive, Rangely got the ball back on the 33 yard line and this time Panther quarterback Kanden Brady hit Willis on a dump pass to the middle that Willis reeled in, turned to the outside and ran in for a touchdown.Keenan Harvey converted the extra point to put the Panthers up 13-6 at halftime.Grumley finished the game 14 for 19 for 187 yards, two TDs and two interceptions. Josh Alsop rushed for 64 yards on 11 carries. For Rangely, Brady went 5 for 13 with one TD and two interceptions. The speedy Willis picked up 103 yards and two TDs on 11 carries and had another 46 yards and one TD receiving.Next week, Coal Ridge will travel to Cedaredge for its Class 2A Western Slope League opener.
