Coal Ridge girls lose by two points

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado ” Two points.

That’s all that kept Coal Ridge’s girls basketball team from Fort Collins.

With the ball and a chance to tie in the waning moments of Saturday’s Class 3A Sweet 16 meeting with host St. Mary’s, the Titans fell prey to the Pirates’ pressure defense and failed to net the tying basket in a 41-39 defeat.

“All you can ask for against a great team like St. Mary’s is for a chance to win at the end, and we had one,” Coal Ridge coach Rick Schmitz told the Colorado Springs Gazette after the game. “We had a play called but it just broke down and we didn’t get the shot we wanted.”

And so ended the most successful girls hoops season in Coal Ridge’s four-year history. The Titans wrapped the campaign with a 17-7 record and their second straight playoff appearance. By making Saturday’s regional final, the Coal Ridge girls were as far into the postseason as they’ve ever been.

Matraisa Beecraft scored 13 points to lead the Titans in their upset bid against the Pirates, who head to the March 12-14 eight-team state tournament in Fort Collins with a 21-3 record. Kelly Romero added 10 points, Tori Verdieck eight and Morgan Jessup six for Coal Ridge.

St. Mary’s will make its second trip to state in three years.
