Coal Ridge girls win 3A state track championship; Glenwood’s Uyehara takes bronze in 110 hurdles
After day 2 of the Colorado state track meet Friday, the Coal Ridge girls held a seven-and-a-half-point lead on their valley neighbors, Basalt, atop the 3A field. It wasn’t long into the final day of competition Saturday at JeffCo Stadium in Lakewood that Coal Ridge exponentially expanded that score, striding away with the 3A girls team title.
It was the first track and field title for Coal Ridge High School, and the first Garfield County high school track team to win a state title since the Glenwood Springs girls in 1994.
Coal Ridge junior Peyton Garrison started things off Saturday winning the title in the 100-meter dash in 12.38 seconds. Garrison would come back a little over an hour later to win the 400-meter dash in 56.23 and the 200-meter title in 25.02.
In a short amount of time, Garrison had accomplished the rare feat of winning the triple crown of sprinting events at the state track meet. In doing so, she alone contributed 30 points to the Lady Titans’ race to the school’s first state title.

The Coal Ridge girls added more points to their state championship performance with the second-place finish of junior Mikayla Cheney in the girls 1600 in a time of 5:04.29. Cheney was beaten by Basalt junior Katelyn Maley for the title. Her winning time was 5:01.10. Maley got her chance to win her own gold medal after losing to Cheney in the 800 meters on Friday.
Meanwhile, Furman University commit, Basalt senior Sierra Bower placed sixth in the same race in a time of 5:09. Both Maley and Bower helped the Longhorns to place fourth overall in the girls team standings with 56.50 points.

The Lady Titans racked up more points in their relay and field events. The 4×100 relay (Jackie Camunez, Raeanna Nelson, Phoebe Young and Railey Largent) placed second with a time of 51.15, and taking gold in the 4×400 were Natalie Smythe, Cheney, Camunez and Garrison to completely secure the team title with 111 total points.
In the 3A boys competition, Rulbe Alvarado from Basalt put his talent on display in the 400 and 200. He placed second in the 400 with a time of 50.02 and ninth in the 200 in a time of 23.00.
The Coal Ridge boys found success in the finals of their relays. The 4×100 meter (Jack Price, Moises Contreras, Eddie Salazar and Omar Vergara) placed fifth and the 4×400 relay (Price, James Webber, Contreras, Christian Vasquez) placed eighth.
The duo hurdlers from Moffat County, Logan Hafey and Ian Hafey, placed first and fifth respectively in the boys 300-meter hurdles. The Bulldogs also gained points from Evan Atkin and Ian Trevenen in the high jump. They placed third and eighth, respectively.
In the 4A classification, Glenwood Springs senior Taber Uyehara finished out his high school track career in both hurdle races by placing third in the 110-meter hurdles (15.29) and fifth in the 300-meter hurdles (40.67).
