Coal Ridge rolls Eagle Valley

PEACH VALLEY, Colorado ” Eric Schmitz poured in 24 points and Andy Smedra struck for 14 as Coal Ridge rolled to a 75-41 win over visiting Eagle Valley in its boys basketball season opener on Tuesday.

The run-and-gun Titans took a 46-22 lead at halftime and never looked back.

Joining Schmitz and Smedra in double figures was Alex Klein, who scored 11. DaLin Murphy and Jonathan Roessler added six apiece.

Schmitz hit three 3-pointers as part of his big points night.

Coal Ridge’s girls fared just as well as its boys on Tuesday, beating up on Eagle Valley 67-28.

Kaitlin Moeller had a game-high 23 points to pace the Titans. All but two of those points came in the first half, in which 3A Coal Ridge outscored the Class 4A Devils 42-10.

Tori Verdieck added 12 points, eight of those coming in the fourth quarter, for Coal Ridge.

Kelly Romero chipped in with nine points, Matraisa Beecraft eight and Morgan Jessup seven.

Next up for both Coal Ridge teams is a home date with Rifle on Tuesday. The girls tip off at 5:30 p.m. and the boys at around 7 p.m.
