Colorado Mountain Cup on tap this weekend

Some of Colorado’s top amateur club soccer teams will invade the Roaring Fork Valley this weekend for the Colorado Mountain Cup.

With 24 teams in all, the tournament at Gates Soccer Park boasts four divisions, with eight teams in the men’s, eight in the coed, and two women’s divisions (under 25 and open) of four teams each.

“In the men’s division there’s going to be the top adult men’s teams in the state on the club level,” tournament organizer Steve White said. “It’s a really high level of competition.

White considered the Denver Kickers to be the favorites in the men’s division, but believes the local Lega de Carbondale squad could surprise some people. Also, Pepi’s Vail recently defeated the Kickers 3-1 and should be in the running for the championship.

Lega de Carbondale will have an early opportunity to prove their worth, playing the Kickers in the opening match Saturday at 11 a.m. Carbondale also plays the Rovers at 3 p.m. on Saturday and the Monarcas Sunday at 10 a.m. to wrap up pool play. The men’s championship is at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The Sopris Hot Shots are the only other local team in the tournament. The Hot Shots, playing in the under-25 women’s division, face the Vipers Saturday at noon and the Blazes at 4 p.m. Sunday the Hot Shots play PT’s at 11 a.m. The women’s championship is at 3 p.m.

Coed plays begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday and starts at 9 a.m. Sunday. The title game is slated for 1 p.m.
