Conference schedule on horizon for 3A football teams

For area 3A football teams, this weekend is the last to tune up before the beginning of conference play. For the 2A squad, conference time has arrived.

Class 3A Western Slope Conference Glenwood Springs (1-1) gets an extra day of rest this week after its 44-0 shutout win over Class 2A Basalt last Friday night. The Demons face another 2A squad this weekend in Bayfield (1-1) during a Saturday afternoon affair. The contest is the Demon’s only afternoon game of the regular season and is set to kick off at 1 p.m.

Glenwood opens its conference schedule next week Friday on the road against Moffat County.

Rifle, the No. 1-ranked Class 3A team in the state, wraps up its nonconference schedule Friday at home against Class 4A Montrose at 7 p.m.

Rifle is currently undefeated at 3-0, but should be tested by the larger Montrose squad (1-1).

In 2A play, Roaring Fork (1-1) opens its Western Slope slate on the road against Olathe (1-1) at 7:30 p.m.

Basalt (0-2) is looking for its first victory in more than a season and could have a shot at it against Western Slope 2A Roaring Fork Valley rival Aspen (0-3). Aspen brought back the football program this year after a hiatus, much like Basalt did three years ago.

The local soccer and volleyball action gets underway tonight with the Glenwood boys’ soccer team traveling to Palisade. On Saturday the team heads to Moffat County.

The Demon volleyball squad hosts Delta tonight at 7 p.m. at the Glenwood High School gym. Glenwood travels to Moffat County for a match on Saturday.
