Conway shines in Demons’ second straight win
The Glenwood Springs High School baseball team won its second consecutive game with an 8-2 victory over Cedaredge in a nonleague contest at Glenwood Middle School Saturday.
“We’re starting to gel together a little bit,” Glenwood coach Mike Laster said. “You take away the top of the first inning and I was pretty happy with the way we played today.”
The Demons, who defeated Western Slope League rival Rifle on Thursday, essentially gave Cedaredge a 2-run lead in the top of the first inning, with both runs coming unearned due to errors.
Tiernan Conway cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame with an RBI double, and Brock Milhorn drove in Conway with a triple.
From then on in was all Conway on the mound.
The senior pitcher didn’t allow an earned run or walk, and gave up just four hits in the complete-game effort.
“It was the first complete-game outing (for the team this season) and the first game where he was composed and controlled a lot of the at-bats. He got Cedaredge to hit the pitches he wanted them to hit,” Laster said. “He kept them off balance and was hitting his spots fairly well.”
The Demons took a 3-2 lead in the fourth and, keyed by a two-RBI triple by John Faris, blew the game open with three more runs in the fifth. Andrew Blake, who went 3-for-3 on the day, finished off the inning by driving in Faris.
Along with Blake, Brian Raymond also had a multi-hit day, going 3-for-4 with a double.
Glenwood (2-7) returns to league play Tuesday on the road against Battle Mountain.

RIFLE – The Rifle Bears played like they had something to prove Saturday, pummeling Battle Mountain 13-0 and 19-1 in two mercy rule-shortened Class 4A Western Slope League baseball games Saturday.
Coming off a disappointing loss to Glenwood on Thursday, the Bears (4-1 WSL, 9-3 overall) allowed just five hits in the two games and never trailed.
“We were a little bit frustrated with how the game went on Thursday and the guys came out very focused,” Rifle coach Troy Phillips said. “They were hitting the ball much sharper and we didn’t have the errors we had on Thursday.”
Adam Krick pitched a complete game and allowed just two hits in the first game. Shane Fazzi notched the victory in the second game with three innings of work before Jason Enewold came in to finish off the last two innings.
Neither game was ever in doubt as the Bears jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning of the opener and sealed the second game win with a 15-run second inning.
Enewold led the offensive attack, going a combined 4-for-5 in the two games with two doubles and a three-run homer. He finished the day with seven RBIs.
Owen Madison was 4-for-6 with two doubles, Kip Jessup was 4-for-5 and Krick was 5-for-7.
