Cougars advance to semifinals

The Glenwood Springs Middle School Cougars advanced to the semifinals of the annual PEG League eighth-grade boys’ basketball tournament on a 40-24 first-round win over Basalt Tuesday.

Ryan Foraker led all scorers with 14 points, six coming in the third quarter, during which No. 3-seeded Glenwood pulled out to a commanding 31-19 advantage.

Defensively, the Cougars held the visiting Longhorns to eight points in the first half, while taking a 19-8 lead at intermission.

Chance Stevens chipped in six points for the Cougars. Pat Waller and Kevin Warkentine scored five points each. Rory Johnson led Basalt with 13.

The Cougars face No. 1 seed Carbondale, who had an opening-round bye, in one of two semifinal games scheduled for Thursday at Carbondale Middle School. Preceding the 6 p.m. contest No. 2 St. John of Parachute faces No. 4 Aspen at 4:30.

St. John advanced from the first round by defeating No. 7 Rifle. Aspen downed No. 5 Riverside 44-33.

Semifinal winners advance to Saturday’s championship game at 10:30 a.m. The losing teams play for third place at 9 a.m. Both games will be played at the Carbondale Middle School gymnasium.
