CRMS skiers finish eighth at state

VAIL – Colorado Rocky Mountain School students Mia Gaw and Tyler Henderson finished eighth in their respective divisions of the Nordic Classic at the annual Colorado High School Activities Association’s ski championships.

On Saturday, Gaw completed the course in 28 minutes, 36.3 seconds, 12 seconds ahead of ninth-place finisher Erin Kiernan of Aspen High School.

Steamboat’s Sarah McCarthy won the event in 25:38.8, ahead of teammate Korie Steitz’s 26:58.7 time.



Competing in the girls’ freestyle, Gaw, a Carbondale resident, finished 71st in a field of 79 skiers.

In the boys’ Nordic, Henderson maneuvered around the course in 23:40.4. His time was 12 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor.



Henderson’s teammate Martin Krueger concluded the race in 36th place with a time of 26:25.9.

Simi Hamilton took the gold medal in a winning time of 20:58.9.

In the girls’ Giant Slalom, CRMS student Vanessa George finished 41st with a combined two-run time of 2:58.06.

Summit High School won the overall boys team state championship with 678 points, six points ahead of second-place Aspen. CRMS finished 11th out of the 14 participating schools.

The Aspen girls returned the favor in the division’s team point standings. The Skiers downed Summit, 644-631 for their second straight team championship.

CRMS finished in 13th place with 135 points.
