CRMS soccer has to forfeit 2 wins and a tie

CARBONDALE, Colorado ” A misreading of the rules has the Colorado Rocky Mountain School boys soccer program forfeiting two wins and tie from its current season.

Turns out the Oysters have been playing an ineligible fifth-year senior thinking he had a year of soccer eligibility remaining since he did not play during his freshman year.

“We discovered he remains ineligible to compete according to the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) detailed rules,” CRMS Director of Communications Lisa Raleigh wrote in an e-mail release to local newspapers on Wednesday. “Our understanding of the CHSAA eligibility rules was that a student could not play more than four seasons in any sport (based on their 2008 Competitor’s Brochure checklist) and that this student was eligible, when in actuality upon entering ninth grade, a student has eight consecutive semesters of eligibility under CHSAA.”

The player in question will sit out the Oysters’ remaining games.

CRMS Director of Active Curriculum Drew Brennan made clear that his school was in no way attempting to skirt the rules.

“What I’ve said to (CHSAA Assistant Commissioner) Bert Borgmann is I reiterated that this was born of us being really passionate about giving our students wonderful experiences, preparing them for life,” he said. “It absolutely wasn’t malicious.”

CRMS victories over Coal Ridge (Sept. 9) and Roaring Fork (Oct. 2) and a Sept. 6 tie with Roaring Fork will now go as down as losses for the Oysters in the official standings.
