Cross country teamsset pace at Hotchkiss

Area prep cross country teams continued their string of impressive performances this weekend.Running at the Hotchkiss Invitational, Glenwood Springs took the boys team championship and Basalt captured the girls team title on Saturday.The Demon boys 31 points was the low score in the boys meet, bettering the runner-up Hotchkiss score of 51 by 20 points. Olathe was third with 52 points. Basalt’s total of 75 points, placed them fifth in the team standings.Alex Tiernan turned in a sparkling effort for the Glenwood boys. Tiernan, a senior at Roaring Fork High School senior, clocked the meet’s fastest time, finishing the course in 17 minutes, 46 seconds. He bested runner-up Colin Stewart of Basalt by 14 seconds for the individual title.Tiernan competes for Glenwood because his school does not field a cross country team.Two more Demons – Tory Garling and Zac Winstead – finished in the top ten.Garling posted a seventh-place time of 19:24, and Winstead raced in at 19:36 for ninth. Marcus Bosco finished 14th at 20:08, and Garrett Edquist’s time of 20:09 was good for 16th. Ryan Ward (20:23) and Nick Vanderhoof (20:44) finished 21st and 26th, respectively.Casey Weaver of the Longhorns came in at 11th place with a mark of 19:57. Basalt runners Theo Pulver (20:50) and Duncan McDaniel (22:14) were 27th and 35th on the result board.The Longhorn girls, paced by a two-three-four finish from Kate Wilson, Amy Lund and Sofie Stenstadvold, won the seven-team girls meet with 19 points to runner-up Glenwood’s 44.”I was shocked as I’m sure were some of the teams we ran against. They really packed it in,” said Basalt coach Ron Lund of the girls team’s times.RUN: see page 16RUN: from page 15Wilson’s time of 21:50 bettered Lund’s mark of 21:53 in the race for second and third place. Stenstadovold finished two seconds back of her teammates at 21:55. Glenwood freshman Sharaya Selsor took seventh place in 22:18 followed by Abbey Walter’s 22:41 time. Emily Tates of Basalt earned 10th place by recording a 22:50 finish. Amanda Alberico and Morgan Vernie of the Demons also finished among the top 20 runners. Alberico took 12th place overall in 22:54. Vernie, who ran in at 23:44 was 17th.Both teams are scheduled to run at Saturday’s Demon Invitational at Glenwood’s Two Rivers Park.
