GOLDEN – It’s been two months since Basalt felt the pain of defeat, and more than five weeks since the Longhorns have even suffered the disappointment of allowing an opponent to score a goal.

Denver Christian put a halt to both those streaks – barely – knocking Basalt from the Class 3A girls state soccer tournament with a 1-0 victory in the semifinal round here Thursday.

The No. 3 seed Longhorns (14-2) entered the contest with a 13-game win streak and a 10-game shutout streak.

And while the defense was still solid, the Basalt offense – which averaged almost five goals per game this year – couldn’t solve the Crusaders back line.

No. 10 Denver Christian (14-4) has been the underdog in all three of its victories. The Crusaders downed No. 7 Telluride 5-0 in the first round and upset No. 2 D’Evelyn 2-1 in the quarterfinals.

Denver Christian faces No. 5 Kent Denver in the championship game Saturday. Kent Denver (15-3) notched a surprise 2-1 victory over No. 1 Colorado Academy Thursday.

No other game statistics were available at press time.
