Defiance heads to Aspen for Ski Town Tournament

Ski town supremacy is on the line this weekend in Aspen. Supremacy of the pitch, however, rather than the slopes.

The Glenwood Springs Defiance Rugby Club will be one of eight teams attempting to unseat the Gentlemen of Aspen as the champions of the Ski Town Tournament, which begins Saturday at Wagner Park.

Defiance fell to the Aspen B squad 31-18 last weekend, but Aspen will field its A team during the Ski Town – albeit a less experienced team than the one that won the national championship in June.

And fortunately for Defiance, the Gentlemen are on the other side of the bracket.

Glenwood opens at 11 a.m. against Park City, Utah, with the winner advancing to play the winner of the noon Vail versus Santa Fe, N.M., game at 4 p.m.

On the other side of the bracket, Breckenridge faces Jackson Hole, Wyo., at 9 a.m. on Saturday, followed by Aspen against Steamboat Springs at 10 a.m. The winners of the early game play at 2 p.m., while the losers play at 1 p.m.

Sunday’s action begins at 10 a.m. with the match for seventh place, followed by the match for fifth place at 11 a.m. The consolation final is at noon and the tournament championship contest starts at 1 p.m.
