Defiance notches win in league opener

FORT COLLINS – The Glenwood Springs Defiance Rugby Club got its Division II season off to a solid start – and then some.

Five different players scored tries as the Defiance thumped the Fort Collins Rugby Club 58-15 here Saturday in the Division II league opener.

Ted Browner was the only Defiance player with two tries in the game. Chris Romme, Brian McNamara, Richie Columbus, Brad Leyhe had one try apiece.

But it was the veteran players who keyed the win, according to Defiance club president Tom Sullivan.

“The veterans were the ones who took the leadership role and pulled the team together,” Sullivan said.

Sullivan singled out the play of Adam Tormey, who hit six out of seven kicks, Romme, Tim Swanson and scrum half Ken Murphy.

The Defiance led 25-12 after the first half then held Fort Collins to just three points in the second half to secure the blowout victory.

Glenwood Springs has its first home league game Saturday against Queen City out of Denver. The contest is slated to begin at 1 p.m. at Glenwood Park.
