Demon guard nets athlete of the week kudos

Glenwood Springs High School junior Yuri Salvidrez prefers the assist to the shot when on the court for the Demon girls basketball team.

“I love the pretty assist,” Salvidrez said.

The attitude is perfect for a guard directing traffic on the court, and Salvidrez takes to heart the Glenwood team motto: “If you play as a team, you will win as a team.”

“My job is to make sure everybody knows what to do,” said Salvidrez, who was chosen by coaches and staff as the Glenwood Springs High School athlete of the week. “If I’m out of control, everybody else is out of control.”

Salvidrez and the Demons were in control this weekend.

The guard had a career high 16 points in Glenwood’s 61-47 victory over Faith Christian and helped the Demons to a 3-0 record at the Demon Invitational round-robin tournament. The three-game run came on the heels of a disappointing 0-2 start at the Brenda Patch Tournament last weekend.

“I think we’re pulling it together,” Salvidrez said. “We had a rough week at the Brenda Patch, and after that we decided we needed to take basketball more seriously. We practiced really hard for the Demon tournament and got through it.”

Along with upping its season mark to 3-2, Salvidrez also believed the tournament performance also gave the Demons’ confidence a substantial lift.

“We feel we are prepared, and we don’t feel like another team can beat us,” Salvidrez said. “The only people who can beat us is us.

“The Demon tournament boosted us up a lot and showed we can do amazing things if we put our hearts and our minds to it.”

Glenwood faces Fruita Monument tonight at 7 p.m.
