Demon Invite highlights weekend’s tourney action

Another weekend of furious hoops action is on tap as area prep basketball squads try to squeeze in extra games prior to the holiday break.

Glenwood Springs High School hosts its annual Demon Invitational round-robin tournament starting today at 3:30 p.m.

The event features 12 games over two days with four girls teams and four boys teams.



On the boys side, Class 4A Glenwood (1-2) is coming off its first win of the season and first under new head coach Kevin Flohr. The Demons open their tournament play with an 8 p.m. contest tonight against Class 3A Faith Christian (0-1).

Two other 3A teams, Ignacio and Eagle Valley, play at 5 p.m. today. Ignacio enters the weekend with a 1-1 record, while Eagle Valley has yet to play a game.



Saturday’s boys schedule has Faith Christian and Eagle Valley facing off in the auxiliary gym, while Glenwood takes on Ignacio in Chavez-Spencer Gym. Both games are at 10:30 a.m. The late games are all in Chavez-Spencer and have Faith Christian against Ignacio at 3 p.m. and Glenwood taking on Eagle Valley at 6 p.m.

On the girls side, Greeley Central and Eagle Valley kick off the tournament with a 3:30 p.m. game today. Class 4A Greeley Central (0-2) hasn’t scored more than 30 points in a game yet this season and will try get its offense untracked against a Devils squad that is playing its first game of the season.

Glenwood (0-2) starts the tournament against the only undefeated team in town this weekend, when it plays Faith Christian at 5 p.m. Faith Christian is 3-0 in the young season, including a 65-62 victory over Basalt.

The Saturday games start at 9 a.m. with Faith Christian and Eagle Valley playing in the auxiliary gym and the Demons taking on Greeley Central in Chavez-Spencer. The girls action wraps up with a 1:30 p.m. contest featuring Faith Christian and Greeley Central and a 4:30 p.m. game with Glenwood Springs against Eagle Valley.

The Grand Valley girls team is also hosting an invitational this weekend with action starting today. The Cardinal boys squad, like most other area teams, is hitting the road for tournament play. Grand Valley began play at the Meeker Shootout Thursday night.

The Roaring Fork boys and girls teams and the Basalt girls team are all competing in the three-day Steamboat Springs Tournament, which started Thursday.

The Rifle boys squad began play in the Alameda Tournament on Thursday night and the Rifle Girls travel to Montrose today for the Black Canyon Tournament.
