Demon soccer scorer named athlete of the week

A scoring spree on the soccer field and in the classroom helped Glenwood Springs High School junior Chelsea Strautman win this week’s athlete-of-the-week award.

Strautman, on a goal-scoring surge for the Glenwood girls soccer team, was named the GSHS athlete of the week by school faculty and staff.

The honor is presented weekly by McDonald’s Restaurant in Glenwood Springs.

Strautman scored nine goals in the three previous Glenwood Springs soccer matches – all victories.

Her latest scoring outburst, which included two assists, came in the Demons’ 11-0 win at Moffat County last weekend.

She and her teammates will play Steamboat Springs at 6 p.m. Friday at Stubler Memorial Field in an early Western Slope League showdown.

Strautman, 17, was born in Greeley. She is the daughter of Eric and Carolyn Strautman of Glenwood Springs.

She also is the editor of the school newspaper and is a photography buff.

She said she plans to attend college after high school and hopes to continue with her soccer career.
