Demon tennis splits pair of road duals
The Glenwood Springs High School girls tennis team was missing some key players but still salvaged a split in duals at Hotchkiss and Paonia on Thursday.
The Demons thumped Paonia 6-1, and lost a tight contest to Hotchkiss by a 4-3 margin.
Against Paonia the Demons singles were perfect. Celeste Cashel, Cassie Croissant and Molly Axelson all earned 6-0, 6-0 victories over their opponents.
In doubles play, Glenwood’s Regina Waltsak and Jackie Weast downed Brianna Ridgeway and Kristin Kropp, 6-2, 6-3 and the duo of Rachel Zancanella and Caitlyn Fowler swept their opponents 6-1, 6-0. Maggie Tolan and Kari Nesbit won by forfeit. The only loss for the Demons in the dual came in the No. 1 doubles spot where Lisa Saathoff and Tamara Flannery fell to Becky Cannell and Mahala Greer in three sets.

Hotchkiss posed a stiffer test for Glenwood.
Molly Axelson was the only Glenwood singles player to notch a victory, downing Amanda Curtice without giving up a game.
Glenwood won two doubles matches. Waltsak and Weast beat Caneyl Burtis and Anna Campbell 6-1, 6-4 and Tolan and Saathoff downed Chelsea Burtis and Krisha Curtis 6-0, 6-3.
“Maggie Tolan played pretty exceptionally today,” head coach Phyllis Zilm said. “It was really fun to watch her play.”
And, despite the split, Zilm was pleased with the effort, particularly from some junior varsity members who played up.
“Cassie and Tamara really stepped up to play varsity positions,” Zilm said.
Glenwood’s next action is Tuesday when the Demons host Aspen.
