Demon’s Aten sixth at 152 pounds

Guy Brickell, the coach of Glenwood Springs High School’s first-year wrestling program, takes pride in just hearing Demons announced for a match after the program’s long hiatus. On Saturday at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Matt Aten did one better. Aten was announced as a sixth-place medalist at 152 pounds in the Class 4A State Wrestling tournament.Since it was their first year, the Demons wrestled an easier schedule than many 4A teams during the regular season. Maybe Aten didn’t get the respect he deserved. Despite falling to No. 4-ranked Jordan Titoni, of Pueblo Centennial, in a 14-6 major decision, he’s got that respect now.Hot off winning the regional title last weekend, Aten won his first-round state match with a pin on Thursday night before being knocked into the consolation bracket by the No. 3-ranked wrestler, Cañon City’s Andrew Cooper, on Saturday. In the consolation bracket Aten faced Eagle Valley’s Kylan Kottenstette, another wrestler picked to medal by On the Mat. He downed Kottenstette and followed it up with a win against Skyview’s Stephen Livingston, who entered the tournament with a 29-5 record.Despite losing to Thompson Valley’s Andy Harem in the next match, the run to the semis guaranteed a medal for Aten after his final prep match and, as important, a medal for the Demons in the first year back as a varsity program.
