Demons banish Devils

GYPSUM — Wrecking Homecoming seems to be fair game when it comes to Glenwood Springs and Eagle Valley football.

The Devils knocked off the Demons, 42-28, at Stubler last fall, ruining Glenwood’s proceedings. The Demons returned the favor Friday night, 19-0, during Homecoming at Hot Stuff Stadium.

Unfortunately for Eagle Valley, junior running back Riley Rowles went down with an injury on the first play from scrimmage, a 4-yard gain. He appeared to have a left leg injury and did not return, and the Devils’ offense struggled all evening.

Eagle Valley’s defense did do well to keep Glenwood off the board. The Devils’ Keenan Branch came up with a fumble in the first quarter, and Devin Ward did the same in the second.

However, Glenwood Springs backs Henry Hill and Derrick Chase were a superb 1-2 punch. Hill brought the Demons down the field, and Travis Lundin threw a touchdown pass to Chase for 6 yards to give Glenwood its first score.

Chase claimed his second score of the night with 2:36 left in the half. He bounced off-tackle, and rumbled for 26 yards into the end zone. Eagle Valley tried to mount a late drive before the break, but Evrett Marr picked off Devils quarterback Orin Reichardt and returned it 28 yards to the house.

With a 19-0 advantage at the half, Glenwood was content to run the ball and the clock in the second half.

Eagle Valley did make a change under center in the third quarter with coach John Ramunno inserting junior Harrison Stevens for Reichardt. Eagle Valley mounted a drive with completions Sonam Lama, Mike Ramunno and Jay Neal, but the drive stalled on the Demons’ 36 early in the fourth quarter.

Eagle Valley caught a break in the fourth quarter on a botched punt snap. The Devils took over on the Demons’ 35, but turned it over on downs.

The loss likely did major damage to the Devils’ playoff hopes. Generally, seven wins punches a ticket to the field of 16. Eagle Valley (4-2 overall and 2-2 in the 3A Slope) heads to Montezuma-Cortez next week, and hosts Battle Mountain in two. After that, though, the Devils go to Palisade and finish at Gypsum against Rifle.

Glenwood (3-3, 3-2) returns home next week to host Moffat County.
