WHEAT RIDGE, Colorado ” Glenwood Springs baseball coach Eric Nieslanik knows a tall task awaits his team.

Not only do Nieslanik’s Demons have to make the long haul over the passes to the Front Range for Saturday’s Class 4A District 7 playoffs, but the Demons will face a tough, 14-4 Wheat Ridge squad when they get there.

“You know, they’re a real sound team,” Nieslanik said. “We’ve just got to believe that, on any given day, anything can happen. I think we’ve seen our team play really well at times. We’re just working and trying to get our minds right. We’ll scratch and fight and do the best we can.”

Wheat Ridge High School is hosting the four-team district round and will lead Saturday off with a 10 a.m. game against Glenwood, which finished its regular season with an 11-8 record. The Demons hold the 30th seed in the 32-team 4A playoffs, while Wheat Ridge is the third seed.

No. 14 Pueblo East (14-5) and No. 19 Longmont (11-8) follow with a 12:30 p.m. tilt, with the winners of each opening-round contest going toe to toe at 3 p.m.

The team left standing at the end of Saturday moves on to eight-team, double-elimination state championship series in Denver, which begins May 8.
