Demons, Bears officially in 3A state football playoffs
The Glenwood Springs and Rifle high school football teams each officially made the Class 3A state playoffs when the final wildcard points standings were announced by the Colorado High School Activities Association late Saturday night.
Both the Demons (6-4) and Bears (9-1) made the 16-team postseason field and were among five teams from the 3A Western Slope League to make the bracket.
Rifle, which won its fourth consecutive league championship on Friday night, finished eighth in the points standings. The Demons finished 15th.
Also making the field was Delta (No. 9), Palisade (No. 11), and Eagle Valley (No. 14). Class 3A’s only two unbeaten teams, Discovery Canyon and Evergreen (each 10-0) are the top two seeds in the field.
Rifle, which downed Summit 40-7 in its season finale on Friday, finished right behind seventh-place Conifer in the points standings. Glenwood, thanks to its 42-28 win over Steamboat Springs on Friday along with Berthoud’s 28-14 loss to No. 3-seeded Roosevelt on Friday, switched spots with Berthoud in the points standings. The Demons were No. 16 headed into the weekend.
Elizabeth, the team Glenwood defeated in the first round of the 2013 state playoffs, finished No. 17 in the standings.
Seeding for the playoffs will be determined by CHSAA today. First-round playoff games are scheduled for Saturday.
