EDWARDS, Colorado ” There was no drama in the rematch.

Last week Battle Mountain boys lacrosse led Glenwood Springs, 8-4, in the fourth quarter, but the Demons rallied, and the Huskies escaped with an 8-7 win.

The Huskies led Glenwood, 8-4, again on Tuesday at Freedom Park in Edwards with 12 minutes to go. This time, they shut the door, breezing to an 11-4 victory.

“What happened the last time we played them was we stopped winning the faceoffs at the end of the game,” Huskies coach Bob Daino said. “Today, both Matt Granzo and Coleby Henzlik controlled the faceoff. When you control the faceoffs, you control the tempo, possession. You control the game. Today, they didn’t give up on faceoff or the ground ball.”

And Battle Mountain seems not to have given up on its season either. After nine losses in a row to start the program as a CHSAA sport, the Huskies have a three-game winning streak.

“A win streak is always good,” said the Huskies’ Reeve Sanders, who had two goals for Battle Mountain. “We controlled the ball. It was the passing game. It’s more experience. Our chemistry is coming together. We’re becoming more of team.”

“We played fairly well. But it looks like Battle Mountain has really stepped up the intensity. They did a good job today,” Glenwood coach Greg Schroeder said. “We started kind of slow and got the momentum back. Just like last time, we didn’t have enough in the end.”

Henzlik posed Glenwood’s first problem Tuesday. He scored two quick goals on his way to a game-high four tallies. And this was after Henzlik put up six against Eagle Valley in a 15-3 win Monday.

“He’s definitely a good player,” Schroeder said. “We reacted to that. We ran a denial on him and shut him down after we identified him. We were able to adjust on that. He obviously came out strong and meant business.”

Drew Wegner put Glenwood on the board, but his goal was sandwiched by scores from the Huskies’ Colby Childers and Sanders for a 5-1 lead after one stanza.

Cole Kloster scored Glenwood’s next two goals. The Huskies answered with Jon Paul Ferzacca, Chris Libertini and Granzo.

Up 8-4 going into the fourth, Battle Mountain pretty much played keep-away, possessing the ball in Glenwood’s end and putting up three more scores to ice the game, including one from Patrick Perry, who’s earned the nickname “The Vacuum” for his ability to scoop up ground balls.

“All of a sudden, they’re just looking for one another,” Daino said. “They’re passing to one another. It’s nice. We look like a lacrosse team now.”

Glenwood Springs (2-10) heads to Aspen Friday and then hosts Eagle Valley Saturday. Battle Mountain (3-9) wraps the home slate with Durango and Grand Valley.
