The Glenwood Springs girls tennis team wasn’t just taking on opponents on the court Saturday in its road duals against Paonia and Hotchkiss. The Demons also had to contend with some blustery weather.”There (were) balls that just died as soon as they bounced,” said Glenwood coach Phyllis Zilm, who estimated the winds gusted up to 35 mph during the match at Hotchkiss.Glenwood split its double-dual day, downing Paonia 6-1 and coming up just short against Hotchkiss, 4-3.The Demons had two singles and one doubles team that didn’t lose a match all day.No. 2 singles player Roni St. Pierre, a Rifle student who plays for Glenwood, dominated Paonia’s Brianna Ridgway, 6-0, 6-0. Against Christine O’Connell of Hotchkiss, St. Pierre came back after dropping the first set for a 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 win.Caitlyn Fowler didn’t lose a set during the day at the No. 2 spot, blanking Paonia’s Kori Kropp 6-0, 6-0 and defeating Chelsea Burtis of Hotchkiss 6-3, 6-4.Maggie Tolan and Cassie Croissant had an easy time against Paonia’s Chelsea Bradford and Cheryl Duncan, 6-2, 6-0. Due to the incoming weather, the match against Hotchkiss was shortened to an eight-game pro-set. The Demons tandem downed the Hotchkiss duo of Jessie Baker and Stephanie Leger, 8-1.Maggie Tolan and Cassie Croissant had an easy time against Paonia’s Chelsea Bradford and Cheryl Duncan, 6-2, 6-0.
