Demons hockey skunks Steamboat Springs, 3-0

Coming off a 2-2 tie with one of the top-ranked teams in the state, Glenwood Springs hockey continued to thrust the momentum forward Wednesday, picking up a 3-0 victory over Steamboat Springs at Howelsen Ice Arena.

The win marked starting goaltender Daelen Renzi’s first shutout of the season. He’d record 18 saves on 18 shots.

Drawing first blood in the first period, Demons captain Connor Powell would net a power-play goal off a feed from teammates Ian Holm and Max Mencimer.

Keeping the Sailors at bay in the second frame, Cooper Luetke would light the lamp for the Demons’ second goal. This time, the point would be notched even strength, from a feed by teammate Jett Weatherred.

Finally, Demons high scorer and co-captain Colter Strauman would come up with the nail in the Sailors’ coffin, putting the pill past Steamboat goaltender Ryan Hoffner off an assist from teammates Robbie Weir and Nolan McPherson.

The Demons would outshoot the Sailors 30-18.

Up next, Glenwood Springs prepares for its first home game of the season. The 1-0-1 Demons host an undefeated Battle Mountain team 6 p.m. Friday at the Glenwood Springs Community Center Ice Rink.
