Demons hold on to sink Sailors

Glenwood Springs boys’ basketball coach Roger Duroux said he would need multiple scorers to step up if the Demons were to be successful this weekend.

Duroux got what he asked for Friday night against the Steamboat Sailors.

Glenwood’s top scorer, Sean Flohr, was held in check with eight points, but Andrew Blake and Jesse Hansen notched 13 and 11 points, respectively, as the Glenwood downed the Sailors 50-45 in 4A Western Slope League action at Chavez-Spencer Gymnasium.

“We had good balanced scoring,” Duroux said. “(Two) guys in double figures and two others with eight and nine points, I’ll take that any night.”

Of course a league win of any kind makes it that much easier to take. The victory brought the Demons (3-2) into a tie for third in the league with Steamboat

But they didn’t make it easy on themselves.

Glenwood led by as many as 13 points, but still needed a fourth-quarter rally to pull out the victory.

Steamboat’s Cody Sherrill netted a three-pointer with 4 minutes remaining in the game for the Sailors’ first lead, 39-36, since the game’s first quarter.

The advantage, however, was short-lived.

Blake sunk 1-of-2 free throws to cut the lead to 39-37. A defensive stop by the Demons led to a nice dish from guard Marco Salmen to Blake. He was fouled on the score and converted the conventional 3-pointer for a 40-39 lead with 3:30 left.

Flohr was the focal point of the Steamboat defense, and the Sailors were, for the most part, successful in containing the sophomore. But he still managed to impact the game.

Still clinging to the one-point lead, Salmen managed a steal that eventually led to a long-range bomb from Flohr with 2:33 left to put the Demons up 43-39.

Devon Borvansky put back an offensive board for the Sailors to cut the lead back to two, but Flohr and Jeff Screen both went 2-for-2 on back-to-back one-and-one trips to the charity stripe to give the Demons an insurmountable 47-41 lead with 54 seconds left. Screen finished the night with nine points.

Steamboat got out to a quick 6-2 lead in the first quarter, but a 18-1 run by Glenwood quickly gave control of the contest to the Demons.

Blake netted three consecutive field goals and had eight of his points during the run, and Hansen netted a 3-pointer and converted a conventional 3-point play.

“I just felt great coming out,” Blake said. “You can feel it when you and your team are going to have a great night when the ball just goes in the hoop.”

“That was just Blake working like crazy,” Duroux said.

Glenwood led 20-7 midway through the second quarter and 26-16 at halftime.

Steamboat cut the lead to 34-28 at the end of the third quarter and opened the fourth with a 11-2 run to take the 39-36 lead.
