Demons open on strong note

Glenwood Springs High School boys soccer coach Bob Guska looked at this weekend’s Demon Cup tournament as a testing ground for his young team.

After winning two out of three games, Guska likes what he sees in the 2003 Demons.

Glenwood took third place in the eight-team tournament played at Gates Soccer Park and the team’s performance, the coach said, bodes well for the future.

Glenwood opened the tournament on Friday with a 3-1 win over Fort Lupton, then dropped a tough 4-3 decision to tournament runner-up Highlands Ranch Thunderidge Saturday.

The Demons rebounded from the defeat with a 3-2 victory over league foe Moffat County in the third-place game.

Sophomore Victor Osorio scored four goals in three games to pace the Demons.

Area school Roaring Fork finished tournament play with a 1-2 win-loss record.

The Rams fell, 9-6 to Moffat County on Friday, then scored a 6-1 victory against Telluride in a first-round loser’s bracket game on Saturday.

Jason Ibanez scored Roaring Fork’s first three goals, and finished with four goals in the game.

Two of his goals came off penalty kicks in the first half.

In their final tournament game, Eagle Valley posted a 7-0 shutout win over the Rams.

Roaring Fork resumes play on Sept. 4 at Basalt. Glenwood is idle until Sept. 9.
