Demons wrestlers take third place in tournament

The first-year Glenwood Springs High School wrestling team is starting to intimidate long-standing programs statewide.The Demons finished third in the team standing at Saturday’s 20-team West Grand Invitational Tournament in Kremmling and had two individual weight champions.Glenwood scored 101 team points in the tournament. The Demons were one of three squads to hit triple digits.Wiggins won the team championship with 191 points. Middle Park, with 132 points, was the tournament’s team runner-up.Glenwood’s Matt Aten went undefeated in winning the 145-pound division.He is currently listed among Colorado’s top 10 Class 4A wrestlers at 152 pounds.Aten pinned all three of his opponents in the tournament.The Demons’ Mike Mastriani had a similar performance. He wrapped up the 160-pound championship with three victories, all by pinfall.Blake Newby took third-place in the 103-pound division, going 3-1 in matches, that included two major decision wins. Mike Zerfoss and Brad Kline of the Demons finished fourth at heavyweight and 112-pounds, respectively. Glenwood is idle for the holiday break until Jan. 7 when they host the Rye Thunderbolts in a dual meet at GSHS’ Chavez-Spencer gymnasium. On Jan. 8, the Demons are scheduled to compete at the Eagle Valley Invitational in at Eagle Valley High School in Gypsum.
