D’Evelyn ends season for Glenwood girls
DENVER — Glenwood Springs High School’s girls basketball team ran into a proverbial buzzsaw of a team in the D’Evelyn Jaguars on Friday.
D’Evelyn, the Jeffco League champions this season, ran and ran and ran to a convincing halftime lead on its way to a 86-38 victory in the first round of the 4A state tournament.
“If I wasn’t sitting on the Glenwood Springs sideline, I would have been on in complete awe of that team,” Glenwood coach Jacky Gaddis said. “I have no doubt in my mind that they have a Final Four caliber team.”
Glenwood, which finished the season with a 16-6 overall, record, trailed 46-17 at halftime. D’Evelyn will play Silver Creek, a 50-40 first-round winner over Mesa Ridge, in the tournament’s Sweet 16 round today.
Madi Spence finished with 12 points and Makenna Warren six to pace Glenwood, which was outscored 29-1 in the first quarter. Morgan Ducklow had a game-high 27 points and six 3-pointers to pace the Jaguars (19-5).
Five seniors on Glenwood’s roster played their last game in a Glenwood Springs High School uniform.
“Those seniors made a great run, and they were OK after the game because I think they realized that they just lost to a great team,” Gaddis said. “Now these younger players realize what it takes to get to the level we want to wind up at.”
