Dirt Demons place two in top 10 at Chalk Creek Stampede

The Glenwood Springs High School mountain bike team placed two riders in the top 10 at Saturday’s Chalk Creek Stampede in Nathrop.

Riders competing in the race completed two laps of the 6.1-mile course, which climbed 520 vertical feet per lap, according to former Olympic cyclist Jeanne Golay

On the Dirt Demons, the sophomore boys group was led by Aaron Smith in 23rd (out of 74 riders) with a time of one hour, zero minutes and 41 seconds. He was followed in by teammate Austin Burt in 33rd at 1:04:26. Hailey Hoffman bested her top finish by three spots from her last race to finish ninth of 20 competitors in the freshman girls group with a time of 1:21:41. Lucca Trapani placed 5th in the freshman boys group out of 69 riders with a time of 57:11, followed by Ryan Welsh in 50th at 1:21:17. Trapani is now in fourth overall in the South Division.

Several Glenwood riders have qualified for the State Championships, which will take place Sunday, Oct. 25, in Eagle.

This is the inaugural season for the Dirt Demons, who compete in the Colorado League of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA).
